International fellowship


Overseas trained and qualified surgeons who have been appointed to recognized HPB Fellowship positions within Australia & New Zealand may apply to ANZHPBA, within six months of commencing their fellowships, to have their training recognized by the ANZHPBA and may be eligible to receive an ANZHPBA International Fellowship in HPB Surgery

The ANZHPBA International Fellowship program consists of two years education and training.  An ANZHPBA International Fellowship in HPB Surgery will be  presented to those fellows who satisfactorily complete the curriculum & research requirements of the ANZHPBA fellowship program, have a minimum of twenty four months clinical training, have a successful case load achievement, have satisfactory clinical assessments, and pass the ANZHPBA final examination.

Applicants who are accepted into the ANZHPBA International Fellowship program will be eligible to attend ANZHPBA Journal Club meetings and the annual combined ANZHPBA/ANZGOSA Fellows weekend.

Pre-requisites for application (all must be met and ANZHPBA will not facilitate):

  • successful completion of FRACS or equivalent in general surgery
  • appropriate medical registration and visa to work in Australia for a minimum of 2 years
  • acceptance to an HPB fellowship position for a minimum of 1 year at a hospital accredited by the ANZHPBA for post-fellowship training.  Accredited hospital are listed on the ANZHPBA this website

Please note, ANZHPBA does not place international fellows into jobs and applicant must have written confirmation of their job acceptance prior to application. The ANZHPBA does not facilitate visa application nor RACS registration.

Applicants should submit a CV, an outline of career plans, proof of  FRACS or equivalent, copy of Australian Visa, letter of acceptance from the ANZHPBA supervisor of training at the hospital  where they have been accepted for training. Applicants will be required to nominate four referees with email addresses and mobile phone numbers; one must be Head of Unit.

Applications will only be accepted within six months of commencement of training and will not be considered retrospectively.  A $1,000 annual fee will apply.
