Alfred Hospital HPB Fellowship, Melbourne

Number of Fellows: 1/year. One year fellowship.

Minimum requirements: FRACS or equivalent. Post accredited by ANZHPBA for post-fellowship training in HPB Surgery.

Alfred Hospital:

The Alfred Hospital is a tertiary referral and university-affiliated teaching hospital with 688 beds including 50 ICU beds. The Upper GI Unit consists of two services: HepatoPancreatoBiliary Surgery and OesophagoGastric & Bariatric Surgery. The unit is accredited for both ANZHPBA & ANZGOSA training programs.

The fellow should expect to be exposed to a range of complex hepatobiliary, pancreatic and oesophago-gastric surgery for benign and malignant disease. There is also the opportunity to undertake a range of advanced laparoscopic surgery including hepatic, pancreatic, gastric and oesophageal resections, fundoplications, hernia repair and bariatric surgery, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Unit members:

HPB Service: Peter Evans, Val Usatoff, Marty Smith OesophagoGastric Service: Peter Nottle, Wendy Brown, Andrew Smith, Paul Burton, Ingra Bringmann

Team structure: One fellow. Two registrars, 1 HMO, 2 interns.

Unit Activity: 8 half-day operating sessions per week (3 HPB, 3 O/G, 2 general surgery); one half-day outpatient session per week; one MDT meeting per week

On-call: Acute surgery unit admitting all general surgery patients for one 24 hour period/week and one weekend (48 hours)/month. Fellows may assume to role of 'receiving surgeon' with consultant backup.

Unit Operative case-load in 12 month:

  • 366 HPB cases (includes cholecystectomies)
    • Liver resections: 45 (laparoscopic 10)
    • Pancreatic operations: 25 (PPPD 12)
    • Complex biliary cases: 10
  • 110 OesophagoGastric cases
  • 300 Bariatric cases
  • 300 General Surgery cases

Training not offered: No transplant experience. No ERCP experience.
